SOME PHILOSOPHY FROM GOD:
Chapter One was very interesting and eye-opening, and very encouraging
that this book is circulating in the non-UU world. The author Neale Donald Walsh is a
UU in philosophy,
even if he doesn't realize it. The book is a "what would God tell us if we really
wanted to listen" book. In this book, God is certainly taking the fundamentalist
Christians to task. Some of "God's" words include: "Many people choose to
believe that God communicates in special ways and only with special people. This removes
the mass of the people from responsibility for hearing My message, much less receiving it,
and allows them to take someone else's word for everything.
. By listening to what
other people think they heard Me say, you don't have to think at all.
. It is far
safer and much easier to accept the interpretation of others (even others who lived 2000
years ago) than seek to interpret the message you may very well be receiving in this
moment now." God also says that leaders, ministers, rabbis, priests, books, and the
Bible are not authoritative sources. God says "Listen to your feelings. Listen
to your Highest Thoughts. Listen to your experience. Whenever any one of these differ from
what you've been told by your teachers, or read in your books, forget the words. Words are
the least reliable purveyor of truth." God also says "I have never set down a
right or wrong, a do or a don't; I gave you free will.
The idea that I would have a
hell to send you to makes a mockery of God."
My church (see Heretics Unite page) believes in a Higher Power with many names and messengers,
according to the cultures of various parts of the world, and the value of
every religion. Someone asked god why s/he doesn't perform major miracles
anymore, and s/he replied "because every time I do, you people start a
new religion and persecute all my other peoples, or tell them that they
have to believe the same way that you think I'm telling you to
believe." I think that believing that your way is the only
way, is at the root of the terror that we see in today's headlines. I
strongly recommend, as life-changing books, "Ishmael" by Daniel
Quinn, "The Celestine Prophecy" by James Redfield, and the
"Conversations With God" series of books by Neale Donald Walsch.
